DROA Continues Domain Slamming Tricks

Domain Owners Beware!

DROA’s Scammy LetterIf you own any domains, please beware of any unexpected bills arriving by mail about your domain name expiring and expected a payment of three times the amount you would normally pay at legitimate registries, such as GoDaddy or Tucows. I get them all the time and toss them right into the garbage where they belong.

This particular deceptive letter I get comes from a shady company called Domain Registry of America (droa.com). They also use the names, Domain Registry of Canada, of Europe and of Australia and have been tricking technically challenged people since at least 2002.

These clowns are known for their “Domain Slamming” technique, which is the deceptive and borderline fraudulent practice of attempting to trick customers into switching from their own registrar to the scamming registrar, under the pretense that the customer is simply renewing their subscription to their old registrar. They obtain your contact information through the publicly accessible WHOIS database, and then sends a renewal notice through regular mail in an envelope and on stationary intentionally designed to look like an official renewal notice.

What to do? Just throw this junk mail out with the rest of the trash, remember to pay the renewal fee to your real registrar, and also remember to lock your domains to avoid any unauthorized transfers from any scammers.

Remember also, they are not the only scam in town. Keep your guard up and do not let them take advantage of you.
